Does D-mannose work for UTI prevention?

D-mannose, a type of sugar, has some evidence for reducing the risk of recurrent UTIs, especially in women. It may prevent E. coli bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall.

Clinical Context

Clinics may suggest D-mannose as a preventive supplement for women with recurrent UTIs, especially when other measures have failed. Safety and dosing should be discussed with your clinician.

Evidence-Based Approaches

NHS and NICE recognise the emerging evidence for D-mannose but advise it as adjunct only. It should not be used to treat an active infection.
