Does betamethasone work for lichen sclerosus treatment?

Betamethasone valerate is an effective steroid treatment for lichen sclerosus, particularly in milder or maintenance cases. However, clobetasol propionate 0.05% is usually preferred for initial and severe disease.

Clinical Context

Women may be prescribed betamethasone if clobetasol is unsuitable or as part of a step-down strategy. Our clinic supports tailored regimens based on individual response: Vulval Skin Conditions Clinic.

Evidence-Based Approaches

Betamethasone is included in international guidelines as a second-line or maintenance steroid. Regular follow-up is recommended for all steroid use. More details at NICE BNF.
