Can laser treatment help with chronic vulvar pain conditions?
Laser therapy is not a first-line treatment for chronic vulvar pain (vulvodynia, vestibulodynia), but may have a role in selected cases, ideally as part of a multi-disciplinary pain management approach.
Detailed Medical Explanation
Chronic vulvar pain syndromes are complex and often multifactorial. Laser has been trialled in small studies for vestibulodynia or lichen sclerosus, with some reporting pain reduction and improved comfort, but robust evidence is lacking. First-line care includes pelvic floor physiotherapy, topical treatments, pain management, and psychological support. Laser should only be considered for refractory cases and always within a specialist team. For more, see NHS Vulvodynia and RCOG Chronic Pelvic Pain.
Clinical Context
Chronic vulvar pain should be managed by a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in vulval disorders and pain.
Evidence-Based Approaches
NHS and RCOG recommend established pain management strategies first, with laser considered only in select, well-assessed cases. See NHS Vulvodynia.
