Happy International Women’s Day 2023!

This year is themed towards Embracing Equity.

But do you know the difference between ‘equity’ and ‘equality’?

Equality refers to being equal, where everyone is treated the same and given the same opportunities – regardless of their differences.

However, ‘equity’, is about actually being fair and taking everyone’s differences into account to have the same opportunities and outcomes.

To illustrate the difference between equality and equity, let’s consider an example of cervical screening.

All women are given the same invitation and preparation for the test.

This is equality.

However, for those with limited mobility, additional resources and support are to be provided for these women to be at the same level as others – thus providing equal opportunities.

This is an example of equity.

The Women’s Health Clinic is all about empowering women through education and creating an equitable environment for our nurses and our clients.

We want to ensure that all women have the right access to education and feel comfortable sharing or discussing health concerns.

It’s time we open up conversations and showcase our commitment to gender equality and equity.
