Can vaginal laser treat adhesions or scar tissue?
Vaginal laser may help soften mild adhesions or scar tissue, but is less effective for dense or extensive fibrosis, which often requires surgical management.
Detailed Medical Explanation
Fractional laser works by inducing controlled micro-injury, which can stimulate collagen remodelling and soften some superficial adhesions or fine scar tissue (e.g., after minor trauma or surgery). For thick, deep, or long-standing fibrosis, surgery is generally required. Laser must only be used after careful evaluation and under specialist supervision to minimise complications. For more, see NICE guidance and RCOG GSM.
Clinical Context
Women with adhesions or scarring should be managed by a gynaecologist with experience in pelvic reconstructive procedures.
Evidence-Based Approaches
NICE and RCOG advise individualised assessment; laser may be adjunctive for minor scarring but not a replacement for surgery. See NICE guidance.
