How long should you wait before considering laser treatment unsuccessful?
Most practitioners recommend waiting at least 3 months after completing the full course of laser treatments to assess effectiveness before deeming it unsuccessful.
Detailed Medical Explanation
Laser effects can continue to evolve for several weeks after the last session as collagen remodelling and tissue healing take place. It is standard to reassess at 3 months post-treatment. Earlier review may be warranted if symptoms worsen or complications arise. If no improvement is seen by this point, further investigation for alternative diagnoses and other treatment modalities is recommended. See NICE guidance and RCOG GSM.
Clinical Context
Be patient and follow up with your clinician for proper assessment before concluding treatment has failed.
Evidence-Based Approaches
Best practice includes a minimum of 3 months’ observation before determining failure of vaginal laser therapy. See NICE guidance.
