Recent coverage has asked whether vaginal health needs more focus in women’s healthcare. That conversation matters because many people delay seeking help for symptoms they feel embarrassed to mention.
Vaginal and intimate symptoms can have a range of causes, including hormonal changes, infection, skin conditions, medicines and other health factors. Newer conversations about the vaginal microbiome may be relevant for some people, but they do not replace individual assessment.
If you are preparing for a consultation, write down what you notice, when it started, whether it changes with your cycle or sex, and any products or medicines you use.
