Types of spots

There are 6 main types of spot caused by acne:

Whitehead and/or Milia

An inflamed raised pore with a collection of white cells as the body tries to fight the underlying infection in the pore. If squeezed, oozes a pus like liquid. The pore is sealed withian the skin

Blackhead

An open pore/comedone, which is black due to oxidisation of the build up of dead skin cells trying to rise to the surface, often associated with working in dirty environments and teenaged skin, and skin which does not have a regular cleansing or deep cleansing routine

Papule

Seen in more severe cases of Acne. Inflamed raised lumps or bumps, often in a cluster that come to a head. Much bigger than a whitehead and often get worse upon drainage. Control may require antibiotic therapy to resolve underlying infection to calm before further treatment can happen.

Pustule

Further on from papules, inflamed and infected often all the way to the base of the sebaceous gland ( the gland responsible for releasing the oil that hydrates the skin) and most likely to leave a scar if squeezed.

Stages of Acne

Acne can be broadly divided into 3 categories for ease of deciding which program or approach is best suited to the patient.

Stage 1

Mild pimples ( superficial spots), blackheads and milia, whiteheads in some places, little inflammation

Stage 2

Greater amount of blackheads or larger in size, small papule or pustules localised, acne breakout may occur in other areas such as neck, chest and back, Slight inflammation

Stage 3

Significant inflammation, severe papules/pustules, cystic nidules, hugh risk of scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Other issues to consider relating to Acne
Acne sometime has some longer lasting effects, even once it has calmed from the active phase.

Scars, Pigmentation and Redness

These are the side effect of outbreaks and can leave the skin uneven in texture, or be very noticeable.

There are several different types of scars but can loosely be categorised as :

Macular Scars

Macular ( scars characterised with darker pigment/tone than the surrounding skin). They often look puckered in appearance

Ice Pick Scars

These are characterised with small, fairly deep holes that look like a puncture or stab mark by something sharp.

Rolling Scars

These are caused by tight structures or bands that run under the skin giving it a puckered appearance that looks like an undulating hill

BoxCar Scars

Round or oval craters on the surface often referred to as pock marks

Pigmentation

The most common type of pigmentation seen in acne is Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This is a response to injury of the skin and can be the result of acne, burns or friction.

This type of pigmentation results in tan, brown or black colour to skin

Once acne is under control, skin care and in clinic treatments can reduce or prevent further outbreaks.

Principally aimed at controlling an outbreak, maintaining healthy skin once this is controlled, and resolving post outbreak issues such as acne scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Benefit is to dry out the sebaceous glands where bacteria thrive and it also reduces redness/rosacea. This treatment is not a cure, as such, but a very useful way of controlling acne so that other treatment regimes can be used.

Maintenance

This can range from a tailored skin care regime, through to regular treatments such as medical needling to deliver nutrients to promote healing and reduce inflammation, and in some cases reduce the appearance of scars ( as well as providing anti-ageing benefits too)

About IPL

Light is described in terms of its wavelength which is measured in Nanometres ( Nm). Different wavelengths have different properties

When light is applied to tissue it has an effect on the structure it encounters, and what outcome is aimed for. Typically light covers to heat in most cases with IPL, destroying the target and leaving the surrounding area unaffected. About Microdermabrasion

It is a non-invasive procedure that uses tiny crystals or other exfoliating surfaces to help remove the superficial layer of dead skin cells.
When you take away the stratum corneum, or the top layer of skin, the body considers it as an injury. It then quickly replaces the lost skin cells with new, healthy ones. The entire procedure usually takes about 30 minutes for the face.
The machines can buff and polish the skin using a stream of fine crystals or a diamond tip, while some also vacuum loose skin cells from the face.
