Redness or reddening of the skin can be caused by many factors and your practitioner will be able to make a full assessment of the cause, and possible intervention required
Common Redness Conditions
Just like dry and oily skin types, there is also a sensitive skin type. This type appears to be easily irritated by a range of factors that are normally tolerated by well-balanced skin. These factors can range from emotional to environmental factors e.g. stress and weather change.
It is caused by the irritation of nerve ending in the top/outer layer of the skin. This is due to the weakened protective barrier of the skin.
Symptoms often begin with episodes of flushing, where the skin turns red for a short period, but other symptoms can develop as the condition progresses, such as:
- burning and stinging sensations
- permanent redness
- spots (papules and pustules)
- small blood vessels in the skin becoming visible
Rosacea is a relapsing condition, which means there are periods when symptoms are particularly bad, but less severe at others.

This is also known as spider veins. They are commonly found on the face and legs (but also appear on other parts of the body). They tend to develop at any stage in an individual’s life time and can originate from many factors i.e. hormonal changes or the sun.
Eczema is a condition that causes the skin to become itchy, red, dry and cracked. It is a long-term (chronic) condition in most people, although it can improve over time, especially in children.

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales.
These patches normally appear on your elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, but can appear anywhere on your body. Most people are only affected with small patches. In some cases, the patches can be itchy or sore.
Psoriasis affects around 2% of people in the UK. It can start at any age but most often develops in adults under 35 years old, and affects men and women equally.
The severity of psoriasis varies greatly from person to person. For some it’s just a minor irritation but, for others, it can majorly affect their quality of life.
Psoriasis is a long-lasting (chronic) disease that usually involves periods when you have no symptoms or mild symptoms, followed by periods when symptoms are more severe.

About IPL
Light is described in terms of its wavelength which is measured in Nanometres ( Nm). Different wavelengths have different properties
When light is applied to tissue it has an effect on the structure it encounters, and what outcome is aimed for. Typically light covers to heat in most cases with IPL, destroying the target and leaving the surrounding area unaffected. At low power light can cause a chemical change in the affected structure, as in the case of Acne treatments.
